In an interview with CNN Fortune, Microsoft’s Head of Xbox Phil Spencer gave an enthusiastic – if optimistic – response regarding this year’s E3 event. When asked about exclusive console titles and what role they’ll play now that the new current-gen consoles are in swing, Spencer confirmed that exclusivity will indeed play a major role for Microsoft’s Xbox One, and revealed that E3 2014 will be an important event for Xbox to show its future plans for both exclusive and third-party titles; Spencer believes that E3 will be a great opportunity to showcase what’s on the horizon for Xbox One, coining that “it’s only going to get better.”
“Exclusive games will continue to play a major role for Xbox in the new console generation, just as they have in previous generations. I’m a true believer in our exclusive platform features like Kinect, SmartGlass, and the Cloud, but games have always been the bedrock of our consoles at Xbox. On Xbox One, we came out of the gate strong last November with Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, and Ryse: Son of Rome, and we haven’t slowed down having just released Kinect Sports Rivals, and of course Titanfall. This E3 is important for us to show gamers our future plans for exclusives and third-party support,” Spencer told CNN Fortune.
“Right now I think we have a strong lineup of in-development exclusives, including games like Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, Quantum Break, and Halo, in addition to some exciting titles you will hear more about at E3. It’s going to be great at E3 to be able to share the games coming exclusively to Xbox One, and it’s only going to get better,” he added.
Phil Spencer was promoted to Head of Xbox back in late March, and promised that gamers will come first for the Xbox One; “[we want to] make sure we’re completely focused on that gaming customer, that core gaming fan. Making sure of that, that’s what I’m going to bring to this position is a focus on gaming for Xbox One,” he explained in an interview. Spencer also recently spoke out against Xbox One fanboyism, too.
Nintendo announced its plans for E3 on Tuesday, April 29, which includes a Super Smash Bros. tournament – where 16 “highly skilled” players will battle it out for a yet-to-be-announced prize. Mass Effect 4, Uncharted 4, Sims 4 and more are also to be revealed at this year’s E3. What’s more, 343 Industries will be bringing some Halo news to share at the event.
E3 2014 will be taking place between Tuesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 12 in Los Angeles.
