For those who do not know, Wolfenstein: The New Order is a first person shooter being developed by MachineGames and will be published by Bethesda Softworks. On top of this, it was previously announced that this latest edition will be single player only; personally, the lack of online features does not stop me from purchasing it, but I am disappointed because I grew up playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein’s PC multiplayer. With that said, the single player only experience has worried fans: will the limited game experience be worth the $60 price tag? And with the release of Wolfenstein: The New Order right around the corner, Creative Director Jens Matthies took to reddit to refute this concern.
“I think a single play through could end up close to 20 hours. But there’s also lots of incentive to make a second play through, especially to explore the alternate timeline.” Obviously, the game takes place in the alternate timeline of a Nazi controlled world, but how can the players explore an alternate timeline themselves?
”I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it changes the vibe of the story to a degree and alters the gameplay somewhat. We think of it as an alternate ending, but instead of it just affecting the final cinematic, it affects the tone of the whole game a little bit.”
Jens Matthies further elaborates on this alternate timeline and how it is triggered by the player’s choice, which happens early in the game. And that he “recommends to do a second play through and see what would have happened if you chose differently.” Now, I hope that this ‘choice’ is not a click right trigger to kill him or left trigger to keep him alive scenario: which almost never works and always feels cheap. But at least Jens has justified a $60 single player experience with 20 hours of gameplay and the idea of replay-ability. With that said, Wolfenstein: The New Order will be arriving on May 20, for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. And finally, the possibility to play the Doom Beta is still available when you pre-order the game.
Do you think that Wolfenstein will have high replay value? Will the single player be worth the $60 price tag? Will you be purchasing the game on May 20? Let us know in the comment section below! And for all updates continue to read Gamer Headlines.
