Earlier today, Ubisoft released their earnings report for ‘FY14’, the fiscal year that ended on March 31st. In the 31-page document, (which can be read in it’s entirety here), Ubisoft revealed that a team of ten studios are working on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Unity.
Page 19 of the document reveals that the studios working on Unity include their more notable Montreal, Toronto and Singapore branches, along with teams in Annecy, Bucharest, Chengdu, Kiev, Montpellier, Quebec and Shanghai. Last year’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, was developed by a seven-studio team, and was noted for its impressive scope and scale. Now, with 10 of 29 worldwide studios working on Unity, Ubisoft is looking to build on the success of last year’s installment, and test their limits even further. No doubt that the release of next-gen, (or is it current-gen?), technology will aid them in this endeavor.
Ten separate studios working on one game is a huge amount, yet Ubisoft makes no mention of this being all of them. Most notably, the report fails to mention Assassin’s Creed Comet, which was announced in tandem with Unity earlier this year. Whether or not Comet is being developed by one or more of the ten studios already assigned to Unity remains to be seen; yet the possibility of more than ten studios working on Assassin’s Creed titles this year still exists.
What are your thoughts? Does the fact that over one third of Ubisoft’s studios are working on Unity alone surprise you? Do you feel this dedication to the Assassin’s Creed franchise is justified? Let us know in the comments.
