Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of those games that crop every now and then whose concept and setting instantly intrigues you, especially if you find alternative real-world history interesting – even more so if it has a compelling narrative.
MachineGames’ executive producer Jerk Gustafsson took a humble moment on PlayStation.Blog to discuss the game’s narrative, and how they believe that through Wolfenstein: The New Order the studio has developed a game with environments, characters and experiences that you normally don’t see in your everyday first-person shooter.
Whilst they think that gaming still has a long way to go in terms of conveying the narrative, Gustafsson feels that MachineGames shines in being able to have created a good story that’s been combined with fun gameplay.
“It’s an adventure not unlike Where Eagles Dare and Inglourious Basterds,” Gustafsson began. “It’s a totally story-driven game experience that has a range of environments and characters and gameplay styles that you don’t normally see in standard first-person shooters. Drama, humor, and even love are carefully layered into the experience.
This is where we can break ground, where gaming still has a long way to go — the narrative — this is where I believe we shine,” they continued, “where I believe we will continue to shine. Great stories combined with exciting and truly fun combat experiences. This is what I believe is the future of gaming.“
