Why Elder Scrolls Online Is Delayed For Consoles

by GH Staff

Bethesda’s MMORPG based on their long-running Elder Scrolls franchise was supposed to hit consoles next month, specifically on PS4 and Xbox One – however, that release date has since been delayed for a number of reasons. Pete Hines, the vice president of PR and marketing for Bethesda has shed some light as to why the game has had to be delayed in an interview with Computer and Video Games. The discussion is primarily focusing on The Evil Within, however the topic of The Elder Scrolls Online eventually crops up, in which Hines explains that the company aren’t pleased with the decision but it is something that needs to be done, as follows:

We’re not happy about it – obviously we much rather have the console version out in June. But it seemed like the right thing to do, and we did spend a little time working with the console folks to try to come up with some kind of a thing so that the folks who couldn’t play it could buy the PC version and then add a next-gen console version later for a lot less money.

Other reasons causing the delay include payment issues, but it seems the core problem is due to the different architectures between PC and consoles. Hine explains:

At the end of the day, it’s simply what we said in our statement which was that it’s about taking stuff that we know that works on the PC, but when you take that exact same system and you go to a console manufacturer, fundamentally the way it works under their architecture is different than the way that we do it.

Released for PC back in April, The Elder Scrolls Online is the first in the series to focus on the MMORPG genre, and requires a subscription to play, currently at $15 per month. However, a 30 day trial is available for those who simply want to try it before fully committing themselves. Were you planning on buying the console version or are you already deep into the PC version? As always, leave your comments below.
