If this year’s E3 disappointed you with the absence of any Metroid information, then do I have some good news for you. In an interview with several key Nintendo staff, Stephen Totilo of Kotaku discovered that they have some internal plans to develop both a 2D and 3D Metroid game. During the talks, Shinya Takahashi, the man who runs Nintendo’s SPD group and responsible for multiple projects, had this to say regarding Metroid:
“So it has been a while since we released the last one and we’re having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we’ll be able to share something about them.”
This statement doesn’t reveal much but it does signify that the series is far from dead and gone. The last Metroid game released was Metroid: Other M from 2010, a game developed by Team Ninja which introduced us to Samus’ past. This game was met with very mixed reception and wasn’t the smash hit success that many hoped it would be.
The Metroid Prime series was the first to bring Samus to the 3D plain, with the original Metroid Prime released back in 2002 for the Gamecube and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption released in 2007 for the Wii. Hopefully we’ll see more of Samus’ adventures in the near future, upgraded with modern visuals and gameplay for the Wii U. A while back, the developers of the Metroid Prime series, Retro Studios, was confirmed to be working on a new project, but no word on this being a new Metroid title.
