To put Team Dignitas’ not-so-ancient woes into retrospective is to essentially take a look back at the NA LCS’s last few splits from a unique and rather exciting perspective. The story is that of the fall and rise of one of the LCS’s most iconic teams, and in good old-fashioned Hollywood style, it features a happy ending with lots of potential to turn even happier in the future.
Only about three months ago, Dignitas were in shambles, looking to stave off relegation and eventually barely managing to do just that. On March 25, Scarra, the team’s cornerstone mid laner dropped from the lineup, essentially admitting that Dignitas had major problems in the area and looking to address some of their mid- lane issues through the addition of GoldenGlue. The move was little more than a desperate measure called for by the obviously desperate times the team was going through, but it was good enough for them to go 6-6, avoiding relegation. Their mid lane problems far from solved, Dignitas’ future looked as uncertain as ever.
Luckily for the beleaguered group though, another team was having a far worse time right about then: Team Coast proved much less adept at damage control than even Dignitas and – to make a long story short – they ended up booted from the LCS and falling apart.
One team’s bad luck turned out to be another’s lucky break though: through Team Coasts breakup, a number of attractive and essential pieces became available, pieces which Dignitas found were exactly of the kind they so desperately needed. We’re talking about Shiphtur and ZionSpartan of course.
One of the best mid laners the game has ever seen, Shiphtur was not only a genuine answer to all of Dignitas’ prayers, by adding top laner ZionSpartan, Dignitas effectively imported a very potent and already well-oiled duo, that eventually ended up turning the team completely around. The two free agents were added on May 2, and with them in the lineup and with Scarra getting more and more comfortable with his coaching, Dignitas have reached a level they may only have dreamt about before.
Tied with LMQ for first place with a 6-2 record, they now look like genuine title contenders and the best thing about the whole setup is that with Scarra’s coaching getting better and better each passing week and with the two new players settling better and better into their roles, there’s still tremendous upside to what this motley crew of LoL fanatics can achieve on the pro circuit.
