Sony PS4 Supports SSD too. How to Install a drive and Repair the console

by GH Staff

[dropcap size=dropcap]Y[/dropcap]ou have bought your new PS4 but you still think it needs and upgrade? How difficult is it to install a new SSD in place of the old HDD provided by the manufacturer? Does Sony Playstation support other storage devices than the default one?

Well, the answer is, Yes! Definitely Yes! And the process of removing and changing the HDD is quite simple, as the storage device is hidden under a hood that is fixed in place with just one screw. Another reason to believe that Sony has already thought about facilitating future upgrades of its core console is the fact that they have taken ease-of-access into consideration, even for those who have no previous expertise on assembling and disassembling electronic devices.

The increased performance is visible right from the start. The gameplay and the overall experience are superior to when the game is played from the old HDD. The only issue is whether it is worth to invest in this upgrade or not. SSD drives are expensive and the improvements they may add are not always visible enough to justify the extra costs. Thus, the most cost-effective upgrade would be changing the HDD with a faster 7200 rpm HDD or with a hybrid drive.

The video below provides information about the upgrade operation and the possible improvements in user experience the SSD may add.

The new PlayStation 4 is easier to repair than you may have expected

It is always a pleasure to see the interior of a modern gadget, and more than that, it’s satisfying to observe that the manufacturer paid attention to the details and the interior design as well, not only to the exterior.

Sony gave us an official PS4 dismantle a few days ago. The video clip however came with some missing scenes and thus, we could not appreciate how difficult the whole operation is very well . The specialists from iFixit on the other hand were not satisfied with the official Sony video and got to dismantle the next gen gadget on their own.

The whole process is not as important as their conclusions are. According to the iFixit teardown video, the Playstation 4 console is quite easy to dismantle and repair by the users themselves. Moreover, we can change the hard drive without loosing the console’s warranty. If you want to do it however, pay attention to some of the screws as not all of them can be removed without losing the warranty of the PS4 device.

Unfortunately, Playstation 4 cannot be used with external storage devices such as USB flash sticks or hard drives. Perhaps, this is the main reason Sony had make it so easy for us to replace the hard drives. However, we can only hope than in the future, an update will be released in order to remove this issue and let us use external devices as well.
