During E3 2014, Ed Boon presented Mortal Kombat X on PS4 and highlighted several new details of the upcoming fighter. Ed Boon is the head of NetherRealm Studios, the team behind 2011’s excellent return to form: Mortal Kombat (aka Mortal Kombat 9). The game will run at 1080p and 60fps, retaining the smooth, lighting fast gameplay that the series is known for. The stages will be new and dynamic, with impressive visuals and events occurring in the background. You will now be able to interact with the environment just like in Injustice: Gods Among Us, able to leap off of objects and throw some of them too. The interactions will work slightly different to Injustice so we won’t be seeing the exact same thing each time.

The story of MKX takes places years after the events of MK9, up to 25 years later according to Ed Boon. Characters from the series’ past will return, aged and slightly different than before, alongside the newly introduced characters. The antagonist of the new game isn’t revealed just yet, but Ed Boon says that it will be a ‘surprise’. The 4 new characters that we’ve seen so far are Cassie Cage (the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade according to Ed Boon), Kotal Kahn, D’Vorah and Ferra/Torr. Each of these new characters are very unique and will each add something new to the already diverse roster of Mortal Kombat.

In terms of mechanics, all the staples of MK gameplay will return, including fatalities, but the meter management of MK9 will also be featured. The meter in the game is divided into the use of Enhanced or ‘EX’ moves, a Breaker move that interrupts your opponent’s combo, and the devastating cinematic move ‘X-Ray’. The X-Rays in MKX are considerably more brutal and gory than in MK9, made possible by next gen technology. Now, players will be able to select between 3 different variations of the same character, each variation giving the character different abilities. With this new customization option, players can choose which style fits them best and this will likely affect how the character is fought against too.
