After most of the focus has been placed on the villain of Far Cry 4, it was only a matter of time before Ubisoft revealed the main protagonist. The game has both been positively and negatively reported about in the last few weeks; the box cover art, which contained the villain Pagan Min sitting with an Asian slave, was deemed racial and controversial.
Since then, the company has defended the cover by stating that “[Pagan Min] is not white and is not the player;” on the other side of the spectrum, Ubisoft and Sony’s E3 press conference ‘blew gamers out of the water’ by revealing cool cinematic and gameplay footage. Both previews showed the expansive universe of Kyrat and have fanboys clamoring for the game’s November 18 release date.
And after E3 2014, it appears that company is gracing the public with even more details; the Far Cry 4 official facebook page just released a picture, name and description of the game’s protagonist. The main character of Ubisoft Montreal’s open world shooter is Ajay Ghale: and the description reads “Kyrat native, devoted son, and Pagan Min’s guest of honor.”So at least, Ajay is not rich, white and spoiled; that alone gives Ubisoft enough to refute the racist allegations. In fact, he is a native of Kyrat, which is the fictional Himalayan region that the game is set in. Now, the second phrase, ‘devoted son,’ could have something to do with the game’s leaked synopsis: Ajay travels through Kyrat to fulfill his mother’s dying wish. As for the last phrase, ‘Pagan Min’s guest of honor,’ those who tuned into Ubisoft’s conference became witnesses to the antagonist’s capabilities.
