Back in 1996, Nintendo debuted the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive, or 64DD for short. Not unlike the Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis in the US) Disc Drive, it was a device the bolts onto the bottom of your console, taking advantage of the emerging compact disc market to expand the capabilities of the console. The addon however was a complete commercial failure, and are now considered rare collectible items despite the lack of available, limited to just the F-Zero X expansion pack, Sim City 64, and Doshin the Giant.
A french Youtuber and collector by the name of Jimmy130 has uncovered a secret fourth title however, in the form of an extended edition of Nintendo’s famous Super Mario 64, which he picked up from a Japanese second-hand shop. It’s worth noting that although this version of the game was demonstrated at SpaceWorld 1996 (in a time before E3, of course), it was never widely released and is considered an urban legend. Many people even called poor Jimmy a fraud, until he posted two youtube videos of the game in action, posted below. From what we can see, the game boasts some minor differences to its cartridge based cousin. The title screen has been altered, and load times are improved, though there are also some game breaking bugs. Check it out below:
