Did you know you can use a DualShock 4 wirelessly on PS3? This news comes to us straight from a Reddit user called shafiggy16. In previous months the PS3 could only pick up a DualShock 4 when connected via a USB cable, but thanks to Sony’s recent 4.60 firmware update, it seems some preliminary cordless drivers have somehow slipped through the cracks.
Don’t get too excited however, as the support isn’t quite as complete as it could be. When pairing the device to your console, it only registers as a standard “wireless controller.” This means that many of the Sony-specific features like rumble and motion control aren’t likely to function properly. It’s also worth noting that some games may not even work at all with a DualShock 4. This hit or miss result is also apparent even when plugged in.
If you’d like to try it out regardless, feel free to follow the steps listed below!
- Plug a DualShock 4 into your PS3 via a USB cable
- In PS3’s Settings menu, navigate to Accessory Settings -> Manage Bluetooth Devices
- When ready, select “Scan For Bluetooth Device”
- Unplug the USB chord from the controller and press down on the home and share buttons till the DualShock 4’s light bar starts strobing.
- The PS3 will eventually detect that a “Wireless Controller” has been found. Plug the remote back in via USB to select it.
- Once it’s selected, you should be able to unplug and use your DualShock 4 freely!
Again, support for DualShock 4 is limited, but it’s possible that in due time that Sony might eventually release complete drivers for the hardware. If you want to, feel free to post your success stories below!
