Destiny gets a release date

by GH Staff

It’s been an active weekend for Bungie! The devs have just announced the official release date for their upcoming massive multiplayer shooter! So far, the game is planned for release on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, as well as the new generation consoles Xbox One and Playstation 4.

That’s right. September 2014 is when Destiny is going to hit markets, and we have so many reasons to be hyped about the announcement.

First of all, Bungie knows their stuff when it comes to shooters set in space (the success of the Halo series is as good a testimony as you’re ever going to get). Then, there’s the notion of having a high budget FPS game set in a space world. Yes, we’ve had stiff competition when it comes to realistic this year. Battlefield 4 was a great hit, Arma 3, even with all its problems, is still a very solid and complex game, and well, there’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, which I wouldn’t describe as being insanely realistic, but which is undoubtedly fun as hell. But in terms of quality sci-fi action games, we haven’t received all that much yet. So yes Bungie, we’re anxious to see what you have in store for us!

The game will provide an advanced customization system, allowing players to choose their outfits, customize the way they look, their load-out, and will also provide a 3rd person perspective pre-battle area where you can interact with other players, repair, rearm and plan future battles. The storyline also shows great promise (it’s a sci-fi after all, so there’s no limitation to what the writers can come up with), and we’ll get to explore areas such as the dunes of Mars, an abandoned Earth and the jungles of Venus. So yes, there’s potential for some great scenery and artwork, and I’m confident Bungie can pull it off!

Of course, we still have many unanswered questions, and Bungie does tend to tease a lot with feeding us breadcrumbs, but dodging concrete answers. We know there will be three playable classes, mainly the Hunter, Titan and Warlock, but there are also hints of more classes to be revealed later on. Bungie has refused to state if there will be any vehicles that players can drive, stating that “we’ll have to wait and find out” . I’m inclined to think that the actual answer is yes, because most major FPS games now rely on this (the Battlefield series, the Arma series, etc.) aspect as well, and also because Bungie has done it before in Halo. But, this is speculation on my behalf, so don’t take it for granted.

Beta for Destiny will start sometime during the summer of 2014, but only on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The next-gen console owners will have to wait a bit longer. As for PC users, there’s no good news here – at least for now, there are no plans for a PC or Mac version of the game, at least not officially.

If we’ve managed to peak your curiosity, we’ll satisfy it by adding a gameplay video of Destiny from E3, as well as the recently released teaser trailer, The Moon!
