There have, in the past few months, already been multiple rumours floating around regarding the type of screen protective layer that would be on the iPhone 6, most of which pointed to sapphire glass. Likewise, there have also been rumours about a larger, 4.7 inch screen for the iPhone 6.
Both of these are practically confirmed today with the iPhone 6 sapphire glass leaked. Tech Youtuber ‘MKBHD’ managed to get his hands on the material, and he wasted no time putting it through its paces.
The bezels are very slim along the sides, although the top and bottom bezels are as large as ever, which is a bit of a shame, but understandable. The sapphire glass itself is extremely thin and also very clear, something Marques was impressed by.
What’s more exciting is the sheer strength of the sapphire glass. Not only did it resist bending and scratching, but it was practically impervious to knife stabs and keys being dragged across it. This is one of the most important and often underlooked aspects of a display, and it’s great that Apple is looking for ways of improving in the area.
Sadly, MKBHD wasn’t able to do a drop test yet to see how the protective sapphire glass will hold up to shattering, but I’d speculate it would do very well. The layer seemed very flexible, and that should definitely help it not shatter.
Many users have either migrated to, or opted for, Android devices as the iPhone’s display has been too small. While the iPhone 5 did increase the size to 4.0 inches, this was still regarded as on the small side. Finally, Apple is starting to increase the screen size, in an effort to bring back the customers who’d want a larger display.
