Sony’s recently released Q1 financial report has raised a few eyebrows over the past couple of days. Most gaming outlets have relished in the fact that PS4 has outsold Xbox One by a 3:1 margin, but there’s some more interesting news if you take a look at the fine print. In few words, Sony has been able to significantly reduce production costs of its latest console; leading many to believe that a PS4 price drop might be on the horizon.
According to the document, production “cuts have allowed Sony to revise its financial expectations, increasing its projected FY2015 operating income for its Games & Network Services division from 20bn yen to 25bn yen.” Considering there’s an extra five billion yen now on the table, will Sony be able to undercut its standard $399 price point for PS4?
The financial evidence is there to suggest it may happen, but other internal company matters might stifle any possible PS4 price drop. In February of this year, low company profits forced Sony to sell its entire Vaio PC division. In fact, financial projections at that time suggested that the entire corporation might be looking at a $1.1 billion loss by the close of 2014. In that sense, while PlayStation continues to rule the roost at the current-gen console king, the rest of Sony could stand to make a little bit more cash. Selling PS4 for the same price at a reduced cost, might be exactly what they need.
