Lego Ninjago Nindroids is the latest Lego video game to hit a store near you, this Lego game surprisingly has only been released for the handheld market. You can pick it up on PlayStation Vita and 3DS. Sadly or for better this Lego game seems to have gone backwards, offering the linear yet fun mission based gameplay with a main hub that you can jump to during missions.
For the most part as with all previous Lego games that play this way, it works well, however after seeing the expansive worlds from Lego titles such as Lego Marvel Superheroes and Lego The Hobbit it leaves a lot to be desired.
The hub is a very small area in which you can purchase new characters and learn new moves as well as choose which level to play next.
Your goal is to defend new Ninjago city from the Dreaded Overlord and his Robotic Army of Nindroids. The game sees you through various levels that last anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes each. The levels also have a variety of gameplay styles, sometimes you will be on foot, others in the air using a wide array of vehicles to get to your objective.
The vehicle side is on rails though, so while you can control the action, you can’t control where you go during the unfolding action. This again puts much of a dampener on the title.
The game does offer a wide variety of boss fights though, like other Lego games and for me these were where I had the most fun as bosses weren’t as predictable as previous games set them to be and the difficulty seemed to be much more on cue depending who you were fighting.
Visually Lego Ninjago Nindroids isn’t something that will have you in awe, it’s much more of the same and looks like it has been ported over from the 3DS rather than being designed for the Vita. Textures look basic, the colors aren’t as vibrant as they could be and the game has an undeniably empty feeling, almost as if there is no atmosphere whatsoever.
To top it off multiplayer is non-existent!
The soundtrack is good though, and challenges spread through each level, create tense and fun moments, especially if you are trying to beat the time limit or get through an entire level without getting your Lego legs pulled out.
Overall, Lego Ninjago Nindroids is a solid title, but it just doesn’t seem to live up to the Lego games that have been released before it, in fact a step backwards is what it feels like and the game left me quite bitter with a thank god it’s over style of finish. Lego Ninjago Nindroids is essentially a Lego game with no character and a variety of on rail moments mashed up with a few fun battles.
Sadly, this Lego game for me was disappointing.
