In light of Star Citizen’s major success in the Kickstarter department, EA has released Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger for free on Origin. Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger was released on PC in 1994, along with ports to the 3DO and PlayStation in later years. It put in live-action cut-scenes with none other than Mark Hamill, also known as the actor who played Luke Skywalker.
To obtain Wing Commander 3, you’ll have to own Origin on your computer and download the game through the link provided, or on Origin’s client by September 2nd, 2014. Wing Commander 3 will permanently stay there, so you might as well pick it up now and play it later if you’re swamped on new titles! Other free games that Origin has put up are Peggle, Dead Space, and Plants vs. Zombies! If you’re into free games, I’d suggest keeping a look out on EA’s “On The House” program, which gives out free copies of games “on the house”. No catch either, just have to download the full game through Origin and you’re on your way!
It’s also interesting to see this push from Origin right after the hype from Star Citizen peaked once again. Star Citizen has raised over 49 million dollars for it’s future game to be released in 2015. We’ve only gotten teaser footage of what the game is like and we’ve backed our money with this game. As gamers transition into a phase for a consumer can fund video game projects or play games when they’re clearly unfinished, what does this mean for the gaming industry? Could it mean that we’re promoting unfinished games to come out sooner so we can get our hands on them? Or will be shun away the early access phase we’re going through? We’re all unsure of the future of video gaming.
In the mean time, go pick up your copy of Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger. Enjoy gaming while gamers try to figure out what’s going on with how games are marketed.
