Rust – State of the game and development plans

by GH Staff

With all the attention DayZ has been getting lately, we’ve felt it would only be fair to take a loot at a similar project that is equally fun and complex, mainly Rust. Rust is basically what you get if you combine Minecraft with DayZ. While the guys at Facepunch Studios initially started off from creating a DayZ clone, the project quickly became unique in its own way.

So, what’s the state of the game? Well, Rust is currently in alpha, just like DayZ, and it was released on steam just a few days before Rocket’s game. It’s doing great, and it’s constantly in the top 10 most played games on steam, with peak numbers of around 30.000 players every day. The game really offers a lot of things to do considering how early in development it is. The major drawback at this time seems to be the lack of security on most servers. Being a building and surviving game, it’s a shame to see your hard work being swept away by glitch abusers and hackers.

According to latest devblogs and reddit information, we know for a fact that solving hacking issues is the main priority of the developers. Preventing hackers from looting through doors and walls, solving weapon recoil exploits and preventing hackers from noclipping into bases and houses are all on their to-do list.

In addition, there are plans to improve dynamic spawn and expand on dynamic resource locations. An upcoming patch will introduce barred windows, which will allow players to shoot through but will prevent players from jumping in and out of homes. Even a helicopter is being designed for the game. It is unclear if players will be able to pilot it or not, but based on the fact that the devs have been taking the time to modify interior aspects such as the position of the pilot seat, it’s safe to assume that these helicopters will be usable at some point.

Last, but not least, lead developer Garry Newman tweeted about the possibility of developing a feature that allows mobile versions of the steam app to notify players when their homes are under attack.

There’s definitely a lot of work to be done, and solving the hacking issues should be a main priority for the guys at Facepunch Studios, as hackers are the only thing that are actually game-breaking at this point. Still, the game shows great promise and, even in its buggy and incomplete state, offers great content and replay value.
