A CD Projekt Red employee caused a bit of controversy during Gamescom last week when they admitted that console versions of The Witcher 3 probably won’t run at full 1080p resolution. Since that mishap, the game’s marketing manager Tomasz Tinc has told GameSpot a slightly different story. Rather than dwell on final stats, he claims that The Witcher 3’s optimization process is still well underway. “I know you might be expecting concrete info like the final frame rate and resolution, but it’s simply impossible to give you that sort of thing before the optimization process is complete.” he says. In that sense, it looks like CD Projekt Red has chosen to stay mum in the ongoing resolution wars between PS4 and Xbox One.
If you look at some past rumors however, there’s plenty of cause for speculation. Back in April, a Russian website called Gametech outed that The Witcher 3 might run at 900p on PS4 and just 720p on Xbox One. Since then however, Microsoft has updated its Xbox SDK to give developers a bit more GPU wiggle room. If that extra power is leveraged correctly in The Witcher 3, it’s possible the performance gap between current-gen competitors might be smaller than originally assumed.
As far as frame rate is concerned, it’s been said that The Witcher 3 will run at at least 30fps. This is of course a no-brainer, but the phrase “at least” does open up the possibility for full 60fps gameplay on home machines.
