SEGA released the Ver 2.0.0 update for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on November 3, kicking off Year Two of the crossover racer with a one-on-one Duel Mode, a seventh gadget slot, and a free Bayonetta racer. The official patch notes list the update on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic, and they require the latest version before players can enter online modes or touch the new DLC.

SEGA frames the release as the next leg after the game’s World Championship. “After an exciting World Championship, we’re going full throttle into Year Two,” the studio wrote, promising six CrossOver DLC packs and eight free updates over the course of the year.

Duel Mode brings one-on-one racing

Duel Mode is a 1v1 format that drops the usual 12-racer grid for a two-player fight. Each duel adds a Duel Boost gauge that fills over time and with item use, then spends as a burst of speed. SEGA pitches it as a comeback tool. A well-timed Duel Boost can swing a race that looks decided.

The mode splits into four ways to play. Rival Duel is an offline ladder against CPU opponents that hands out rewards as you climb, and it is the unlock path for Bayonetta. Duel Match throws you into a one-on-one against a player anywhere in the world. Best-of-10 competitions are marked “coming soon” and will run as limited-time events that pay out Duel Medals, which trade for exclusive horns, auras, and other cosmetics. Friend Match supports a two-player local race, with Local Wireless available on Switch and Switch 2.

The Super Slot adds a seventh gadget

Builds gain a new layer through the Super Slot, a seventh gadget slot that amplifies whatever you place in it. It unlocks through the Grand Master Plate, which requires 40 races, and players who already cleared that mark get the slot the moment they install the patch.

The slot arrives with 15 new gadgets, including Mod Gadgets that trade a lower top stat for a big bump in one attribute and Charge Gadgets that add a fourth level to Drift Charge. SEGA also expanded the gadget tooling around the influx: customization plates jump from five to ten, and players get a Favorites list and filters. Unlock requirements for plates and gadgets dropped across the board, from Silver Plate down to 12 races and Master Plate to 28, so new players reach deeper builds faster.

Festivals stretch out and reward streaks

Festival events change shape in Year Two. They now run 10 days instead of three, and the leaderboard ranks longest win streak rather than raw Festival Points. A second-place finish no longer resets your streak, which removes the old punishment for one bad race. AI rival teams can now appear at random in your matches and pay out bonus Festival Points when beaten, and the mode adds four new crowns: Red for the winning team, Blue for the winning team’s MVP, Gold for a five-plus win streak, and Green for beating a rival in World Match.

A balance pass aimed at the middle of the pack

Ring Engine and Hyper Ring Engine had held high win rates, especially in Legend Competition, so SEGA cut Ring Engine’s stat boost from +12 to +8 and its top-speed bonus from +3 km/h to +2 km/h, with the bonus now scaling on the number of Rings held. Ring Evolution’s Ring requirement rises from 10 to 15. Rings themselves respawn faster after being collected, a change SEGA says was meant to shake up a meta where gadgets that generate Rings independently held a significant edge.

Several buffs point the other way. Acceleration Type Machines recover from damage faster, and their signature quick-recovery trait gets a boost on courses full of obstacles and attacks. SEGA fixed a bug where Power Type Machines had a higher top-speed cap than intended. Rocket Punch wall bounces fall from six to two, and Drills, Lasers, and Warp Rings move faster to match the higher average speeds gadgets now allow.

SEGA said the changes “will give racers in the middle of the pack chances to stage a comeback,” and that future gadget and machine adjustments will track usage and win rates.

Homing Punch and Slicer no longer hit the player who fired them, Rocket Punch ricochets far less, and a Bomb’s explosion effect now matches the duration of its attack hitbox. Boost and Double Boost can both appear from an Item Box while you are already holding the other, and several courses had Ring and Item Box placement tuned for their riskier shortcuts. Time Trial gets its own set of gadget rules so that record chases are not thrown off by the meta changes, with Ring Engine and Hyper Ring Engine keeping their older behavior in that mode.

World Match, the Shop, and the free-character cadence

The online World Match hub gets a Free Match option that does not touch your rank, plus matchmaking that pairs you against Rivals of similar skill and pays bonus Donpa Tickets for wins. The main menu was rebuilt to fit the new modes, and a new Shop trades Donpa Tickets and Duel Medals for auras, horns, decals, characters, titles, and Jukebox tracks, including cuts from Sonic the Fighters, Virtua Fighter 2, and Fighting Vipers. Daily Play Missions hand out both currencies for regular play.

Year Two’s free racers roll out on a schedule. Bayonetta is available now through Rival Duel, a McLaren Racing machine arrives later in November, and Aigis from Persona 3 joins in early 2027, alongside six paid CrossOver DLC packs and eight free updates.

Sonic’s 2026 has been busy even before this update. The franchise marked its 35th anniversary with a June livestream, and collectibles keep flowing, from Sonic Frontiers statues to the new decal collaborations in this patch, including k4sen, Sega UFO Catcher Online, AUTOBACS, Imuraya, and Yoshinoya.

SEGA also flagged two known issues in Ver 2.0.0. Before the first Best-of-10 competition starts, Duel Match can show “End Challenge” and “Round -1” on screen, and the “X Tries Remaining” message can linger after an event ends. Both are slated for a later fix.
