Cortex: Razer’s Attempt on the Digital Game Store

Razer Cortex

Razer is hoping to continue that ongoing digital game store success with Cortex. We know about Steam and Origin, the two biggest digital game stores on the market right now. Valve was the first to jump on this idea and has been a smash every since.

Cortex is a nice play on words to the Cerebral Cortex, one of the main centers of the brain. In Razer’s page description, they’ll be releasing the game launcher along with in-store deals similar to Steam and Origin. The main difference that Cortex has is it’ll be integrating Razer Game Booster within the client. If this happens, it would be easier to use all of your Razer product’s software in one central location. No release on if they’ll combine everything, but Game Booster is positive to be in there.

They’ll also be integrating a recording software within Cortex in order to save replays and share them online. Youtube and Facebook video are shown in the description on the page, but I’m sure other platforms will be able to receive the replays.

Last but not least, they’ll be implementing a Save manager. The save manager will allow Razer Cortex players to have a back up save file in case the game crashes or has a system failure. This is good for many reasons. One, it will allow the autosave function on computers, which is always a good call. Two, if there’s any problem with the game’s save mechanic, there’s a back-up file in it’s place. Backing up in the first place is a good decision even outside of video games.

In my opinion, I’m tired of their being too many game clients with certain exclusives for each company. I don’t want to download three different clients just to play three different games. If gaming was more centralized I would be much happier. Although, for those who use Razer Comms, if the Beta comes into a full release and is combined with Cortex, then I would be more intrigued.

What do you think of Digital Game Clients? Do you think this is a good idea for Razer? I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below!
