The addictive puzzle game Tetris will soon be coming to next gen consoles. The Tetris Company has announced their partnership with Ubisoft, publisher of famous AAA titles, including Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, with the idea to create a new Tetris game for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.
Published back in 1984 in the Soviet Union, the puzzle game designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov has become a worldwide phenomenon due to its addictive nature and ever increasing level of difficulty. Based on tetrominos, the version of domino with four square cells, Tetris has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the most ported game in the history of video gaming with appearances on over 65 different platforms by 2011. Currently the game is available on almost every device, OS and console imaginable including iOS, Android, Ps3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP and more.
Release date for the new game hasn’t been mentioned. However, fans are speculating that it could be June 6, 2014 when Tetris marks its 30th Anniversary.
Over time The Tetris Company has tried to offer different versions of the game, but the original is still best accepted by the gaming community. It would be interesting to see how the recent partnership with Ubisoft will affect the game and if the new next-gen console version will feature something we haven’t yet seen before. Nonetheless, it is good to know that the iconic franchise will continue to grow despite its age and the newest innovations in gaming.
