Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition Review

Diablo 3, the dungeon crawler that brought fun, fast paced action dungeon crawling mayhem to previous generation consoles and PC has now crossed over to the current generation of hardware. Boasting better visuals, smoother gameplay and all the expansions, including the original game. Its a massive package and  it delivers. Initially the cut scenes are as beautiful as the first time round, but once you get dropped into the game boy do you notice the difference.

Character models and surroundings look great as do mobs, online seems so far to be a flawless experience with loading times that are lightening fast. If you haven’t played this type of game before then you may be slightly put off by the amount of options available, but basically you have a choice of classes and each class can be customized to your preference. Thousands of loot items are scattered around in chests with rarer weapons and armor obtainable by battling through various mobs.

Mob variations are great too, as although you may tend to see similar models at first, you will eventually reach a point where there are tons of variations. Each has their own weaknesses, strengths and looks. Some of them are just outright beastly.

Environments and effects look great on the current generation hardware. Shimmering rain and dark, dank areas only add to the addictive gameplay.

Multiplayer as mentioned above runs smoothly, you can choose to join others on the same chapter or even the same quest which for the most part worked really well. I had some great sessions with people, mobs are also more plentiful with more players and obviously loot becomes better. Questing with others is clearly a lot more fun and Diablo is a game that should be played in groups. Various classes work great to form an almost unbeatable force depending on your foes.

Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition is a grand example of how a game can make the leap to the next generation with great improvements that don’t overshadow the core experience. You’re essentially getting the PC version on a console, which I am certainly happy with. The game has hours and hours of content that never seem to end and as you get further your character will grow with you. The story is also something worth playing the game for as it isn’t generic like most brawlers.

There were a few noticeable annoyances here and there though. Sometimes mobs were stuck and your character repeats his sayings that at first seem cool, but after a few hours are grating.

Diablo 3 is a game about visual progression and it does this superbly, making you feel like a complete god once you have leveled up and improved your character’s abilities as well as dressing him in the best looking threads available. You can make your character unique and that in itself makes Diablo 3 ahead of the rest.

Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition is a must have in my book, if you’re into the series you have probably already played it to death previously. Replaying it enhanced certainly isn’t a chore though!
