First up, we see a fight between two classic characters, Scorpion and Sub Zero. Right off the bat, before each battle, there’s a unique cutscene that plays between the two characters fighting. Depending on which characters are fighting, you’re greeted with a different cutscene. It’s nice to see that little bit of history being shown being shown between the characters before the gory stuff begins.

Then the fight begins, and one of the main things I noticed was how absolutely stunning the game looks. The characters have been redesigned somewhat, but they still retain classic elements from previous games. Scorpion’s outfit is different, yet still familiar. The animations are super slick, and the sound of bones crunching as punches connect is still hella satisfying. The same applies to moves, we see Scorpion’s lovely screen teleport move, along with a bunch of new unseen moves.

Speaking of moves, Mortal Kombat X introduces what’s called a variance system. There are different variances for each character that change some of their moves. So Sub Zero might have an aggressive freezing attack on one variance, yet have more of a defensive freezing stance on another variance. So depending on what play style you have, there will be a variance you can pick to accommodate that. I completely welcome this, it doesn’t change up the characters too much, so you’re still playing as say, Sub Zero, yet the character is that little bit more personalised to your play style.

Interaction with the background is also a new change to Mortal Kombat X. We see characters leaping off of snowy branches in the background, and even snapping off the branch to crush your opponent with. Depending on what stage you pick, there will of course be different interactions. For example in the jungle stage we see characters swinging on vines in the background. All this interaction is seamless, there’s no sudden change between interacting with the main stage and the background, which is definitely a plus. You’ll be able to smoothly move between interacting with the background and foreground smoothly.

And yes, the x-ray is back! Seeing as technology has significantly improved as of late, the detail in the brutalities are a lot higher (meaning more details in squishing someones lung, or tearing out their spine). And for a Mortal Kombat game, this is perfect. The Fatality with Scorpion was a massive fail, yet Kano’s Fatality was gloriously bloody, I can’t wait to see all the other Fatalities.

The game is expected to release sometime in 2015, and will be out on PC, PS4 and XboxOne.
