Metro Redux Review

Metro Redux first off is a great package consisting of 2 greatly underrated games that have been remastered for the current generation platform. The originals, although underrated were an absolute treat to play. Both Metro 2033 and Last Light were atmospheric, dark survivalist shooters that kept story core to the franchise. The games are actually based on the series of books and were great the first time round. Now they are back with upgraded visuals, better AI and much, much more to whet your apocalyptic appetite.

You play as Artyom for those new to the series and you must fight your way through the treacherous yet awe inspiring Metro tunnels of Moscow in order to scavenge, survive and find more about the so called dark ones. A nuclear war has destroyed the world as we know it which have in turn forced the people of Russia underground to keep safe from the hellish creatures above.

These games rely on a mixture of atmospherics, tension and great story telling to deliver a superb experience and now along with the upgrades made they truly feel complete. Metro Last Lights better control scheme has also been moved over to Metro 2033 along with a host of other improvements.

The games can be bought as a complete package or as separate titles, depending on how you feel which is an added bonus for those who preferred 2033 over Last Light and vise versa. The visual improvements are instantly noticed as well, unlike The Last Of Us remastered which wasn’t so much of a step up in graphical fidelity.

Metro Redux gives the impression that time and dedication had clearly been spent upgrading both games, the more noticeable being Metro 2033. Shadows and environments look superb on the current generation, character models look sharper and move more fluid and although the metro tunnels sometimes don’t seem as dark, they certainly are as scary and eery as before.

As the people go about their daily lives, you can see and feel their pain and sense the loss that they have endured. From the children that have only a few toys to the markets where people sell weapon upgrades and ammunition. The sense that Artyom is not alone is always present and as you delve deeper into the storyline of both games, the more sinister side of living in these tunnels is felt.

Artyom is one of many who have left the tunnels and is one of few to survive the ordeal, as you guide him through the fantastically narrated storyline, you’ll meet an end that will simply blow you away.

This isn’t to say Metro Redux is a perfect title, however it still holds a lot of bugs and glitches that will be familiar to those that have played both titles previously. Enemies sometimes end up stuck, some details merely pop in and sometimes your companion will disappear if you head to far in front of him or her. These are minor things that don’t really detract from the experience and can be easily dismissed. Metro Redux is a title that oozes character and personality and therefore must be played.

It is an experience like no other and shouldn’t be missed!
