Developer Bungie’s upcoming open-world first-person shooter title, Destiny, is one of this year’s highly anticipated games, but it seems that publisher Activision is keen on leaving a lasting impression after launching a replica version of “the Traveler,” which features on the front cover of the title and, more importantly, plays a significant role in the story, into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Alan Ismail, a YouTube user who runs the account MoreConsole, worked with Activision over the past couple of days to successfully launch a weather balloon into near space, with images captured from the Traveler 107,841ft above the Earth.

“What better way to celebrate the Traveler, which plays a crucial role in the story of Destiny, than by bringing one of the most iconic images of the entire campaign to life? I’m excited to have created something unique that celebrates the scale and vision of the game,” Ismail said. “I imagine seeing the Traveler actually hovering over Earth will get lots of gamers in the mood to finally start playing for real when the game goes on sale next Tuesday.”

Behind-the-scenes footage from the launch can be found on Ismail’s YouTube channel below.

Destiny’s plot takes place following an event called “the Collapse,” which resulted in the end of the so-called Golden Age, ended humanity’s colonisation of various planets and left the population near the brink of extinction. With a large white orb known as “the Traveler” hovering over the human’s last city on Earth, it grants special powers to Guardians who are deemed the defenders of the city.

With this being the first title developed by Bungie since their final involvement on the Halo series in 2010 with Halo: Reach, Destiny will be released on September 9th, 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
