Space! The final frontier that has been re-imagined time and time again. Home to legends such as Fox McCloud, Master Chief, and Commander Shepard. Among these galaxy trotting all-stars there has been so sign of Samus Aran. Remaining relatively quiet since the release of Metroid: Other M in 2010, the Metroid series has been non-existent in the gaming community for quite sometime. It was not until Super Smash Brothers 3ds/Wii U have I heard any news of Metroid, and even then any Samus related article has been about the lack of clothing on “Zero” suit Samus.
Recently, Next Level games (developers of Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Punch Out!!) released concept art featuring Samus Aran in her iconic space suit. The artist Nelson “Dedos” Garcia, who worked on Nintendo’s Punch Out!, developed a series of drawings featuring Samus and several boss characters.
According to the Nelson Garcia, the artwork was created as a pitch from Next Level to Nintendo. The idea was shelved in favor of Luigi’s Mansion. This has not been the first time Metroid series has conversed with Nintendo. During 2014 E3 conference, Shinya Takahashi, had expressed interest in bringing back the series, “At this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game.We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we’ll be able to share something about them.”
However, there has been other news surfacing around Retro Studios as they begin their hiring process for a new up and coming video game for the Nintendo Wii. As the studio remains tight lipped about what they are up to, one can only speculate. With loyal Nintendo fans crossing their fingers in hopes of a new Metroid game, it seems very possible that they may get their wish.
