With a franchise that spans a 27-year history and more than 25 titles released in that period (including a remake, remastered versions and spin-off instalments), Hideo Kojima’s well-known series, Metal Gear Solid, has sold more than 39 million games worldwide.
Metal Gear Informer (via Japanese website 4Gamer) has revealed that MGS has currently sold 39,100,000 titles, with publisher Konami confirming earlier this year in May that approximately 38.6 million from the series had been sold.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to Kojima’s upcoming open-world stealth title, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, was released in March this year and received a mixed reception, but Konami did state in the following month that the title had shipped more than 1 million copies worldwide.
Originally released in 1987 on the MSX2, Metal Gear was the first title developed by a then-rookie developer known as Hideo Kojima, as the player assumed the role of Solid Snake, a FOXHOUND operative, and infiltrated Outer Heaven in order to destroy Metal Gear. Since then, Kojima’s franchise has spawned countless titles, with Solid Snake and his father, Big Boss, acting as the series’ primary protagonists.
Hideo Kojima revealed earlier this week on his show, Kojima Station, a preview of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, with more details ready to be unveiled on the title at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Additionally, Kojima’s other project, P.T., will also be at the event, with the MGS creator working alongside filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and the title, which was revealed as Silent Hills upon completion of P.T., features The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.
Running on Kojima Productions’ Fox Engine, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is rumoured for release in Q1 of 2015 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
