Downloading Content Will Cease Come December
Sony announced today that Playstation Home will be shutting down for good come March 31st, 2015.
This announcement comes as a shock for many as Playstation Home still features a strong community. Since its initial launch in December of 2008, Playstation Home has seen “tens of millions of users around the world.”
The announcement came in the form of a posting on the Playstation Forum, stating;
Due to a shifting landscape, PlayStation Home will cease publishing new content on November 12, 2014. Gamers in the U.S. and Canada will be able to download content until December 3, 2014. As a token of our tremendous gratitude to the community, we will also be releasing a series of free content prior to the platform’s closure on March 31, 2015.
Playstation Home was originally designed to be a hub (which was the original name before “Home”) that allowed users to gather and communicate with each other. In Playstation Home, users would create their own custom avatar whom they could groom in their own unique way. As Playstation Home took off, users began to spend real money for features such as clothing and furniture.
It’s clear that Playstation Home had a spot in the hearts of people all around the world, and the news of its closure is sure to be a shock. But who knows, maybe something similar will eventually make its way to the Playstation 4.
