According to Assassin’s Creed Unity‘s senior producer at Ubisoft. Vincent Pontbriand, both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game will run at a resolution of 900p, and a target FPS of 30 frames per second.
Ubisoft has confirmed that they opted for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platform parity for Assassin’s Creed Unity in order to avoid and/or prevent any accusations or undue discussion of possible differences between each respective console versions’ performance.

Assassin’s Creed Unity Console Parity
In regards to the game’s console performance, Pontbriand stated the following:
“We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff. Technically, we’re CPU-bound. The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it’s the CPU that has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel.”
“We were quickly bottlenecked by that and it was a bit frustrating, because we thought that this was going to be a tenfold improvement over everything AI-wise, and we realised it was going to be pretty hard. It’s not the number of polygons that affect the framerate. We could be running at 100fps if it was just graphics, but because of AI, we’re still limited to 30 frames per second.”
2013’s PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag also ran at 900p/30 FPS initially. However, a post-release patch boosted the PlayStation 4 version’s resolution to full 1080p. Ubisoft has not confirmed whether or not they plan to do something similar with Assassin’s Creed Unity.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is releasing on November 11th (NA) and November 13th (EU). The game will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
What are your thoughts on Ubisoft’s “next-gen” Assassin’s Creed running at 900p/30 FPS? Is console parity holding back the image quality of current-generation console games? Why or why not?
