Microsoft Studios’ new game creation sandbox, Project Spark, releases on the Xbox One and PC today for the low, low price of $0.00. Additional content packs are available, and can be purchased with tokens earned in the game, or with real world money. Project Spark has been in open beta for six months on the Xbox One and PC, but there’s no word on the Xbox 360 version of the game yet.
Project Spark is a game about making games. Players are given a world that is essentially a blank slate and can mold it into whatever they want to create. Microsoft’s various demos of the product have mostly focused on making adventure games using Project Spark, but many other genres of game can be created using the engine and utilities provided by Project Spark. After the player makes a game, they can make their game available to the whole Project Spark community, allowing others to download it, play it, and then change it if they think they can make it better. The idea behind this community approach is that everybody should be working together to make the best games possible using this software. Check out Project Spark’s trailer from this year’s E3 for a quick idea of the variety of games that can be made using this sandbox:
Project Spark is also interesting in that it could become a gateway to bigger game design projects if it gains enough popularity. Project Spark provides an easy, simple way to create games that will be appealing to people who are interested in game design, but don’t have much in the way of technical skills. It could serve as a launching pad for some up-and-coming game designers, inspiring them to pick up the skills they need to make something bigger and better.
Project Spark is available for download on the Xbox One Store and the Windows 8.1 App Store.
