Kingdom Hearts 3 Unreal 4 Engine

Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura announced in an interview with Famitsu that Kingdom Hearts 3’s development, after previously hitting a standstill, is transitioning to the Epic Games’ Unreal 4 engine. SquareEnix had been previously using their still in-development Luminous Engine to develop the game, but clearly it’s hit some snags as Nomura claims they made the transition for “various reasons,” but the game production remains on schedule:

“Surely and steadily, and we’re progressing on schedule. For various reasons, we’ve changed the game engine to Unreal Engine 4, because of which we’ve been facing rendering troubles. But Epic Games has been really cooperative and helpful, so we’re progressing just fine.”

The Luminous Engine has been in development for some time, and it looks incredible – shame it’s not actually working at the moment. Here’s a tech demo showing off its alleged capabilities:

In the same interview, Nomura stated that the team is considering a Kingdom Hearts 3D HD remake, as well as that he’s designing new clothes for Sora and Riku.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is slated to release in 2015. What do you make of these changes? Let us know in the comments.
