The well-received DLC for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, entitled Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry will be released as a standalone game, announced Ubisoft today. It seems Ubisoft decided that Adewale was popular enough to get a game of his own. The exact price hasn’t been revealed yet, but grabbing Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry will give you access to the entire storyline of Adewale, consisting of 9 Memories. The game will be released on the 18th of February for the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4, while the PC version will follow one week later, on the 25th.

Interestingly, there are no mentions of a standalone version of Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry for the Xbox 360 or Xbox One. Is this an accidental omission from Ubisoft? Highly doubtful. What are the reasons behind the lack of an Xbox version then? We’ll be sure to investigate further.
Breaking chains and chopping off limbs seems to be at the heart of Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry.
Freedom Cry explores the past of Adewale, a former slave that has risen to the rank of Assassin. He’s not as refined as his older counterparts (such as Ezio), and prefers a more brutal way of taking out foes, through the use of his imposing machete and rifle. Don’t expect an entirely different gameplay though, there’s really nothing to set it apart from the previous titles. It feels solid though, and the story is engaging enough (at times, I’ve felt it was inspired by the recent Tarantino hit, Django Unchained). The major plus of this release is the fact that you don’t need Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag to play it. On the other hand, following the release of Liberation HD on all major platforms (which was nowhere near being a great game), I can’t help but shake the feeling that Ubisoft is pushing the cow-milking process a bit too far.
