As the trailer below illustrates, Child of Light is certainly unique in its conception, being neither a platformer, or an RPG, it’s both. Players will control Aurora, an Austrian girl in the year 1895 as she attempts to rescue the celestial Sun, Moon, and stars, which were taken prisoner by the evil Queen of Night, all in an attempt to reunite with a home that was snatched away from her.
Players can expect to explore the beautifully animated, Disney-esque Lemuria while facing down countless traps, puzzles, monsters, and mysteries as they try and thwart the dangers facing our vagabond heroine.
The Old Guard Returns
Alongside a control system that gives Aurora the ability to fly up and down, as well as walk left and right in typical platformer style, there is a beautifully-constructed combat system that puts gamers in mind of the classic turn-based RPGs of the 90’s, perhaps the best decade for the genre, with players taking turns choosing their various characters, strategies, and attacks in order to strike down the opposition presented by the dastardly beasts that confront them.

And for those same classic RPG fans who enjoy grinding, Child of Light allows for the traditional leveling system alongside a perk tree consisting of over 200 unlockable skills, giving players the ability to customize their combat experience to fit their style of play. Also available, for the Minecraft and Terraria lovers out there, is a crafting station, with over 600 items to forge by hand.
A Reputation Worth Standing Behind
Along the way Aurora will meet several friends, as she and her loyal firefly companion, Igniculus discover a world surprisingly fresh in its usage of old genre stereotypes, unlocking a childlike innocence that many of us lost long ago. And with Ubisoft in the mix, the only thing to expect is to expect the unexpected, as the gaming company has developed a reputation for awe-inducing titles, having destroyed current market trends time and time again with their innovative gameplay and masterfully-written stories.
Child of light is set for release on April 30th, 2014, and will be available for PC, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PS4, and Wii U.
And, without further adieu:
