PSN Names Still Not Changable? Shawn Layden has Answers

PSN names can’t be changed at all, not one bit. It’s kind of run-of-the-mill at this point, but some would still like to know why.

Shawn Layden, the President/CEO/Big Poppa Playden of SCE America, is here to tell us why our lamentably static PSN names are that way. The TL;DR of the thing is that abuse could result from giving players the freedom to rename themselves.

Yeah, we want to give you more control across your experience and your profile and your presence on the network. At the same time, as you’ll understand, we don’t want to make it so that you can go in, grief a bunch of people in Far Cry, change your avatar, change your username, go into CoD and grief everybody over there. We want to stop that.

Dude, that’s, like, the only reason to get Call of Duty, bruh. I mean, righteousness is so 1987, I just wanna ruin everyone’s most excellent day until it is totally not most excellent bruh.

Noble intentions, Sony, but I don’t see Steam having the same issue you seem to with this.

All I’m saying is, its possible, but nonetheless its understandable how you wouldn’t want to pour resources into such a minuscule part of your console’s infrastructure, especially since someone named, say, Griffin Cost, could go and rename himself something stupid like Brother Darkness and nobody would be able to do a thing about it.
