Following Blizzard’s reported World of Warcraft DDoS attacks following Warlords of Draenor‘s launch, it seems that whoever is responsible (or a different third-party altogether) has moved on to a different massively multiplayer online game, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
As a quick summary for those not totally familiar with Final Fantasy XIV, it is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, developed and published by prominent gaming company, Square Enix. The game is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.
Moving on, according to a blog post on Final Fantasy XIV’s official North American website, it appears that players have been experiencing difficulties in regards to logging in to the game over the past few days due to a sustained DDoS attack on Final Fantasy XIV‘s servers.
(Note: A DDoS attack is attack that attempts to increase server load to an extensive level by flooding the network of the targeted servers using a massive number of computers.)

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Being Hit by DDoS Attacks
The following comes from the aforementioned blog post on Final Fantasy XIV‘s official website:
“We would like to take this opportunity to make a report regarding the login difficulties that took place over the last few days.
Currently we are experiencing DDoS attacks from an anonymous third-party targeting the Final Fantasy XIV game servers on the NA/EU data center.
However with the attack we are currently experiencing, only a massive number of access attempts are being made to the server where both character data and personal information of our customers are not in danger of being exposed.
Due to this attack, our game servers, network equipment and network connection are being hit with heavy load at an extensive level, which is causing a disconnection from the game and login difficulties.
Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment. We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.”
It is unknown how long issues caused by the DDoS attack, or how long the actual DDoS attack will persist, however this article will be updated if,or when, relevant information emerges.
