Dragon Age: Inquisition – My pathetic attempt at creating Commander Shepard

Dragon Age: Inquisition Commander Shepard Attempt 11

Since Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s release (to deservedly critical acclaim) last week, we, as gamers, have seen some impressive characters created using BioWare’s powerful in-game character customization tool.

We’ve seen player-made versions of Daenerys Targaryen and Jamie Lannister from HBO’s popular show Game of Thrones, as well as characters from other popular role-playing games such as Geralt from CD Projekt’s beloved Witcher franchise (all three of which can be seen below – respectively).

Now, as a preface, I’ve been playing Dragon Age: Inqusition for the better part of two weeks. I’m about 70 hours in, and fairly close to the end of the game’s critical narrative. However, after seeing the glory of the above player-created characters, I decided to go back to the beginning just so I could try my hand at another popular pop culture/video game character.

At first, I didn’t know who to pick. I thought to myself, “What about Starlord/Chris Pratt from Guardians of the Galaxy? How about Talion from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor? Or maybe even try an elvish version of those things from Avatar?

After some meandering about in my mind, I came to a realization, albeit quite an obvious one. Dragon Age: Inquisition is developed by BioWare. The Mass Effect franchise is developed by BioWare. Both are semi-open-world RPG’s that offer story-changing choices. And both are game series that I wholeheartedly enjoy.

Ah HA! I then, as you probably now know, decided to try creating the default male version of Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series.

You can view screenshots of my self-admittedly pathetic attempt (but you may think otherwise) at recreating Commander Shepard in Dragon Age: Inqusition‘s character creator below:

Note: You can view the album of full-quality, 1080p resolution screenshots at this link.

I will say that he looks better in some scenes than others, but for the most part I think he looks decent. I probably could have gone with various different hairstyles and facial hair, but I felt the ones I picked mostly stayed true to BioWare’s default design.

The hardest parts were the cheekbones and jaw. Still, nobody’s perfect. Also, I hate that the darkest brown hair color really isn’t that dark brown. Pity. He’s not perfect, and there’s a couple of things I’d like to edit, but such is life. I’m definitely crossing my fingers for some Barber Shop/Black Emporium-esque DLC.

Furthermore, I posted my imgur album (link above) on /r/DragonAge, asking for opinions on others thought. The following is a sampling of some comments I received:

“Dammit, I want this game so bad I wanna cry! Never thought I’d say that about a game. Nice character gen by the way.”

“That looks more like a younger Udina than Shepard to be honest”

And my favorite…

“That’s Lance Armstrong, dog.”

Bonus: I found another person who attempted at recreating Shepard, check it out below:

Does it fare better or worse than mine?

So overall, what are your thoughts on my attempt at recreating Commander Shepard using Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s character creator? Shoddy, decent, terribad, gorgeous, et cetera?
