Microsoft’s popular game console, the Xbox One, has just recently celebrated its very first birthday. Many will argue that Microsoft has done quite a bit over the past few months to even the battlefield of the proverbial PlayStation 4 vs. Xbox One console war.
However, one thing a majority of Xbox One owners seem to agree on is that the console is too bulky.
The man who led the team responsible for designing the console, Carl Ledbetter, has responded to consumers’ complaints regarding the Xbox One’s cumbersomeness. Ledbetter said that while he understands the many reasons and possible frustrations that some may have against the console’s size, he has justifications as to why the Xbox One had to have a slightly heftier design.
Read what Ledbetter had to say about people’s complaints regarding the Xbox One’s size after the break.
Xbox One Designer on Complaints About Its Size
In regards to the Xbox One’s necessarily large design, Ledbetter stated the following:
“Everybody gets frustrated, because what we want is for everything to be wafer thin, not get hot and just be a snap to put together. But the reality is that there are very real issues around cooling when you’re pushing some number of watts in the processor, therefore the thing has to have some size to it. There’s always an interesting dynamic between engineering and design, and constraints around performance.”
Furthermore, Ledbetter revealed that the console’s patchwork squares were deliberately designed to mirror the Xbox One’s dashboard.
On that note, Ledbetter said:
“It really does matter. For us, it is about creating a very consistent and seamless experience that is reliable, so that when you see it, it is already starting to communicate aspects of the brand, and when you go into the user experience, it fulfills your expectations.”
For the sake of comparison, the Xbox One is indeed larger and heavier than Microsoft’s previous console, the Xbox 360. However, it is also larger than both its mortal enemy, the PlayStation 4, and Nintendo’s Wii U.
What are your thoughts on Carl Ledbetter’s statements about the necessity of the Xbox One’s undoubtedly larger, bulky design? Are you one of those who claim it to be a problem, or are you indifferent to the fact, and would rather be playing a match of Halo 2: Anniversary (when it works) or a session of Sunset Overdrive?
