Half Life 3 copies promised for charitable donations

by GH Staff

No, there’s still no official announcement from Valve about an upcoming Half Life 3 game. Sure, the gaming community is craving for the return of Gordon Freeman, but right now, it’s doubtful we’ll be seeing a Half Life 3 game any time soon. This doesn’t seem to stop some people from taking advantage from the hype and creating scams and hoaxes. Not little was our surprise when we’ve actually found the option to reserve a copy for Half Life 3 onĀ G2A. No, it’s not a twisted joke, G2A is actually selling packages for Half Life 3, promising that those that donate on their website will be the first players to reserve the game, should it ever come out.

It’s a huge stretch, even with the extreme popularity of Half Life 3. Even if Valve does decide to make the game (which it definitely should, and most likely will at some point), it’s disturbing to see how many people take advantage of the extreme hype. There are currently 2000 copies available on G2A, and to our surprise, over 32 users have donated more than $50 to this end. One particular user actually spent over $600 on this reservation. Of course, it’s not all malefic, these donations do actually go towards charity. Still, making use of Half Life 3 to raise money? It’s a questionable approach to say the least.

Source Engine 2 is no longer a myth, but Half Life 3 still is.

Source Engine 2 is no longer a myth, but Half Life 3 still is.

G2A specified that fans that donate now will only receive their copy of Half Life 3 if, and only IF the game comes out before 2019. That’s more than 5 years. So if you’re unlucky and Half Life 3 comes out in January 2020, you’re out of luck. We can’t really encourage these donations. Should you feel charitable, there are countless ways to donate to whatever you feel right, without resorting to empty promises. We still do hope that Half Life 3 will eventually come out. There have been rumors about the possibility of Valve’s popular franchise to happen on the upcoming Source Engine 2, but a more likely scenario is that the new engine will be used to create Left 4 Dead 3 first.

What’s your take on the matter? Do you think asking for donations through the popularity of Half Life 3 is acceptable, or do you consider this to be nothing more than an elaborate scam? Let us know!
