Voice actor Troy Baker has described working with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima as a “Mind-boggling” experience and praised him as “an absolute genius.”
According to Baker’s AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) session on Reddit, the voice actor/musician was asked about his involvement in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Baker, who replaced the longstanding Patric Zimmerman as the voice of Revolver Ocelot, explained that he did the motion capture for the character’s face and the voice acting, while a Japanese actor was brought in for the bodywork.
“Chris Zimmerman (who’s the performance director) approached me about it, but I had to audition just like everyone else, and thankfully Kojima thought I was right for the role,” he said, when he was asked how he secured the role in The Phantom Pain.
The upcoming installment in the Metal Gear Solid universe is set to have Revolver Ocelot once again playing a significant role — saving Big Boss’ life and working with his Diamond Dogs organisation — and when a user asked what the character’s personality would be like in The Phantom Pain, Baker offered a teasing response: “Not without spoiling the game. But it’s definitely an Ocelot you will recognize.”
Baker isn’t the first well-known figure to have praised the work that Kojima has done in the gaming industry, as filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who is working with the Japanese developer on the upcoming Silent Hills, and David Hayter, the former voice of Big Boss, have also made similar comments.
Outside of the Metal Gear Solid-related questions, Baker also spoke about the influence gaming is now having with the themes that are covered and offered his thoughts on the upcoming film adaptation of The Last of Us.
Running on Kojima Productions’ Fox Engine, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is rumoured to launch in Q2 of 2015 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
