Pokémon Shuffle is a “free-to-play” 3DS game

Bejeweled-eque Pokémon title coming to 3DS for free

Nintendo just revealed their new free-to-play (hooray!) match-three puzzle game, titled Pokémon Shuffle, which will be released somewhere this February.

Think Candy Crush, but with the cutesy faces of our favorite childhood creatures in stead of yummy sweets. Line up three of the same Pokémon using a swiping motion to deplete the HP of the opponents you’re facing.

Does that sound a bit too simple and generic to you? Well, maybe you’re right… but Nintendo is one step ahead of you. You see, you can utilize the Pokémon’s type during gameplay! Nintendo said:  “Players will also be able to raise the level of their Pokemon as they play, enabling them to deal even more damage. Some Pokemon can even Mega Evolve, just like those in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. Mega-Evolved Pokemon are able to remove many wild Pokemon from the Puzzle Area at a time.”

Alright, a free-to-play match-three Pokémon puzzle game… where’s the catch? I wish I could tell you there wasn’t one, but there is (aw…). Pokémon Shuffle grants you five play sessions. They can restore over time, but those impatient individuals among us that tell their selves they won’t be able to get a good night’s rest before they’ve beaten the seventeenth level can spend some cold hard cash (or warm soft cash, as long as it’s money) to immediately replenish their sessions. Nintendo has not yet revealed the price tag for those sessions, though.
