by Archive

The week of April 6, 2015 is another exciting week, with titles ranging from a wide variety of genres. For starters, we get the highly anticipated current-gen release of Dark Souls II, which is sure to please players who have just cleared out the dangers of Yharnam in Bloodborne. This week also marks the arrival of April’s PlayStation Plus games, which means members will receive plenty of free games for their PlayStation devices. Rounding out our picks of the week are Bastion on PS4, Tower of GunsI Am Bread and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Enjoy this week’s video game releases.

[Note: All of the dates and prices listed below are for North American territories. Also, keep in mind that this list is subject to change with new games potentially announced or launching this week without notice.]

  • Aaru’s Awakening

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 – (Digital Only on Both Platforms)

Price: $TBD (Cross-Buy + Free for PlayStation Plus Members in April)

Using teleportation to guide Aaru through beautiful hand-drawn environments, Aaru’s Awakening is a fast-paced Action-Platformer that creates a unique experience. When the title first debuted on PC last February, Gamer Headlines thought it was a great 2.5D Platformer that is a blast to play, despite having disappointing boss sequences. The game is free in April for PS+ members, so definitely check it out if the genre interests you.

  • Bastion

Platform: PlayStation 4 (Digital Only)

Price: $14.99 (+10% Off During Spring Fever Sale)

Following Supergiant Games’ great success on console with the release of Transistor last year, its other acclaimed Action-RPG is also coming to the PlayStation platform nearly four years after its PC and iOS debut. In Bastion, you play as The Kid, the only human alive in the game’s world. Accompanied by a narrator that guides you the all the way to the end of your journey, you’ll have to hunt down monsters through isometric combat scenarios to progress.

  • Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Looking for another punishing experience after playing through Bloodborne? Well, you’re in luck because the Scholar of the First Sin edition of Dark Souls II, From Software’s previous title, is releasing only two weeks after the launch of the Souls-inspired PS4 exclusive. Bundling in all of DSII’s DLC in a single package, SotFS is enhanced version of the 2014-released title that includes additional NPCs, balance tweaks, online functionalities and more. Current-gen console owners who have missed out on From’s Action-RPG sequel will be glad to know that the game is also available on Xbox One and PS4, with upgraded 1080p graphics, a 60 frame per second frame rate and better sound quality.

  • Element4l

Platform: PlayStation Vita (Digital Only)

Also making its way to the console space after a debut on PC is the indie-developed, experimental Platformer Element4l. Controlling four elements, you must shape life by avoiding nature and the sun, as it will undeniably test your precision skills and reflexes.

Mixing in the foundation of the Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon franchises, Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a Roguelike, turn-based Action RPG that has you going through an endless amount of dungeons, fighting a wide variety of creatures with the party you create. • MonsterBag

Platform: PlayStation Vita (Digital Only)

Price: $9.99 (Free for PlayStation Plus Members in April)

Ever heard of MonsterBag? Me neither, but it looks like a quirky Puzzle game for your PlayStation Vita. You play as a blue monster named V who must journey back to his friend Nia all while avoiding the many people surrounding the environment. Because you are a monster, don’t expect the people to be gentle with you, as stealth will be required in order to progress through the areas in one piece. The game is available for free throughout April if you’re a PlayStation Plus member, so you can’t really argue against that.

  • Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita – (Digital Only on All Platforms)

Price: $14.99 (Three-Way Cross-Buy)

Stealth Inc. 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Puzzle Platformer originally released in 2012. A Game of Clones brings in 60 new levels that test your wits and reflexes as you try to escape a high-tech facility filled with security traps.

  • Tower of Guns

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 – (Digital Only on All Platforms)

Price: $14.99 (Cross-Buy on PlayStation + Free for PlayStation Plus Members in April)

Arriving on console following its PC release of last year, Tower of Guns is a fast-paced First-Person Shooter that can be played through a single sitting. Because it has the foundations of a Roguelike experience, Tower of Guns remains a fresh experience every time you jump into it; random enemies, power-ups, bosses, and weapons — you name it. Tower of Guns will keep you wanting more constantly. It is also part of PlayStation Plus’ April line-up, which means you can pick it up for free if you’re a member of the service.

  • Fire

Platform: PC (Digital Only)

Price: $10.99

The Stone Age has never been a setting that has been fleshed out in any way in video games – Fire, a Point and Click Adventure title coming from Daedelic, hopes to change that. Since it is set in an ancient prehistoric time, you’ll have to rely on experimentation to complete your quest for fire, as there is no dialogue of text throughout the entire game.

  • I Am Bread

Platform: PC (Digital Only)

Price: $12.99

I Am Bread stole our hearts when it first debuted in Steam Early Access. Now, it’s time to say hello to the full version of the toasty quest. Guide a piece of bread through an epic quest to become toasted by navigating throughout the dangers of The House. Will you be able to get toasted?

  • StarDrive II

Platform: PC (Digital Only)

Price: $TBD

Elaborating off StarDrive’s deep 4x turn-based Strategy gameplay, its sequel hopes to combine space and ground combat scenarios to deliver an immersive and satisfying experience. Build you space empire and protect universe by colonizing planets, moons, and more.

  • Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today

Platform: PC (Digital Only)

Price: $19.99

With its noir-y tone and beautiful art style, Dead Synchronicity is a 2.5D Point and Click Adventure title that explores the post-apocalyptic setting in a very artistic manner. Inspired by the genre’s classics like Grim Fandango and Monkey Island, it is truly a title to look out for if you’re a fan of Adventure games. As a matter of fact, our review notes that the game is awesome because of its graphical style and tone, which fully increase the intrigue of the game’s fascinating topics.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D

Platform: 3DS (New 3DS XL Only)

Price: $39.99

Nearly five years after its original debut on the Nintendo Wii, Xenoblade Chronicles is being revitalized for the 3DS – the New 3DS XL model, that is. Take Shulk’s adventure on-the-go with this brand-new portable version that fully utilizes the new features present on Nintendo’s newest handheld. This will truly keep you occupied until Xenoblade Chronicles X releases later this year.
