Is Minecraft Being Made Into A Movie?

Minecraft Movie

As well as being one of the biggest selling PC games of all time, the sandbox behemoth, Minecraft, is rumoured to be getting adapted into a film. Hot off the success of the recent Lego Movie, Warner Bros studios have acquired the rights to the indie game from developer Mojang. Lego Movie producer, Roy Lee, is attached to the project.

Minecraft founder, Markus “Notch” Persson, has confirmed that the talks with WB are genuine, telling Game Informer that “[n]egotiations have been going on for a while, but I have no idea what the status of those negotiations are, or how likely the movie is to happen.” This is potentially exciting news for the hugely popular game, especially as registered users on the PC version recently hit the 100 million mark.

With the gameplay involving players building constructions from blocks found and made in the world, Minecraft is generally regarded as a modern, computerised equivalent of the classic Lego building sets. The animated movie, which was released earlier this month, has grossed around $187 million in America and nearly $94 million in other countries after only three weeks in theatres.

The big screen adaptation is said to be live action as opposed to animation, which will no doubt raise a few questions from fans and others in the games industry. Currently, further details about the project are still to come to light, however it’s safe to say Minecraft players across the globe will certainly be intrigued by what the story and visual interpretation will be of an open-ended, story-less game set in a cartoon-y world. Will it be able to hold up to the explosive and popular nature of the game?
