At the beginning of this month, we reported that Mojang’s sandbox sensation Minecraft had sold a massive 14 million copies, smashing previous sales by more than a million in less than two months. Now it appears they have reached a new milestone, as reports indicate the PC version of the hit survival game has attracted more than 100 million registered users. Minecraft founder Markus “Notch” Persson unveiled the news via his Twitter feed yesterday, telling excited followers and fans that he had received an email announcing the figures.
I got an email. We've reached 100 million registered users on the original Minecraft. 14.3% conversion rate to paid accounts. Wow. :D <3

Since its alpha release on PC in 2009, Minecraft has exploded into a gaming juggernaut and has gained worldwide praise and critical acclaim from the gaming industry and fans alike. The game sold more than one million copies less than a month after going into its beta phase. Since then, Minecraft has become the 3rd best selling PC title of all time, beating the MMO sensation World Of Warcraft and Valve’s widely successful FPS sequel Half Life 2 in terms of sales.
Minecraft has since been ported to Xbox and Playstation, the former being released on Live on June 4th 2012 and the latter on December 17th 2013. As of January 2014, more than 11 million copies of the console versions of the game have been shifted. The game is available across multiple platforms, including mobile devices, and is estimated to have racked up sales totalling 35 million across all mediums. Known for its fun, open-world game play environment, ground-breaking sandbox capabilities and extensive modding community, it is hardly surprising that Minecraft has become such a phenomenal success, receiving many awards over the years and being enjoyed by millions of gamers across the globe.
