After it’s debut two weeks ago, Twitch Plays Pokemon have cleared Victory Road, which brings them one step closer to defeating the Elite Four and completing the game.
With over 30 million total views, Twitch Plays Pokemon has become the ultimate diamond in the rough for twitch.tv. A game that was meant to be played alone has become, in a way, an MMO. From stepping out of the characters room to clearing Victory Road, Twitch Plays Pokemon has become an internet sensation that came from nowhere. Despite what most viewers and haters have said during the past two weeks of its performance, the Twitch Plays Pokemon community has displayed impressive results and teamwork, and is currently competing against the Elite Four. As I am writing this, the community has defeated Lorelie, Bruno, and Agatha, the first, second, and third members of the Elite Four, and are now competing against the final member! By the time this goes online, the game may have already been completed, for I believe this will be the final day before the game is complete. However, the question remains: what will happen to the Twitch Plays Pokemon community after defeating the Elite Four?
There has been some talk that Twitch Plays Pokemon may move on to the second generation of Pokemon games, which are Gold and Silver, after completing Red and Blue. This doesn’t surprise me one bit. After the huge success, I can imagine that the Twitch Plays Pokemon community will continue to play Pokemon until either it is tired of it, or the viewers are. But, will the online phenomena continue to attract thousands of viewers each day once they have completed the first generation of games, or will it begin to decline and become a thing of the past?
