Unity’s World Level Designer Director claims that they’re using 30fps because “it feels more cinematic”

The decision to make Assassin’s Creed Unity run at 900p and at 30fps has baffled a lot of gamers, but according to Unity’s World Level Designer Director Nicolas Guerin in a recent interview with Techradar, their doing it on purpose because “it feels more cinematic“.

Will you be able to tell if they walking slowly because its cool or because of lag because it feels more cinematic?

Will you be able to tell if they walking slowly because its cool or because of lag?

In the interview Guerin claimed that while Ubisoft have wanted to push 60fps, he didn’t like it “because you don’t gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn’t look like the real thing. It’s a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird“. He also went so far as to say that “I think collectively in the video game industry we’re dropping that standard because it’s hard to achieve, it’s twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image“.

Instead they want Assassin’s Creed Unity to run at 30fps and push the limits of what it can do to the max and claimed that it was their goal all along because “it feels more cinematic“. The problem with that if they stay with the 30fps, then the games more demanding cutscenes will lag, like the way some players have noticed in the recent Alien Isolations.

The article in question ended with Guerin saying that “It’s like when people start asking about resolution. Is it the number of the quality of the pixels that you want? If the game looks gorgeous, who cares about the number?

Earlier this week Ubisoft had to come out and say that Assassin’s Creed Unity wasn’t dropped to 900p and 30fps because one console mightn’t be able to handle it ands Guerin claim during the interview that 30fps was the what they had planned on doing from the start because it fits action games more and “it feels more cinematic” is a little much in my opinion.

Regardless what’s your opinion on this story? Do you think that they’re doing it just so the PS4 version is stronger than the Xbox One version or do believe that 30fps do look more cinematic?
