Blue Dragon, the JRPG originally released for Xbox 360 in 2006, can now be played natively on PC through re:Blue, an unofficial open-source project. Gamingonlinux reports that the project reached its first proper release on August 27, 2026, extending the game to Windows, Linux, SteamOS, and macOS.
re:Blue does not distribute the game’s copyrighted assets. Players must instead provide data from their own Blue Dragon CDs. Once those files are supplied, the project offers a native version with support for modern resolutions, flexible display settings, keyboard-and-mouse controls, expanded mapping tools, and built-in mod management.
The project gives a PC-focused update to a game based on a design by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Its changes go beyond basic platform compatibility, covering graphics, controls, navigation, achievements, languages, and several restrictions found in the original release.
Modern display options include 4K and ultrawide support
re:Blue supports resolutions up to 4K and can run in either windowed or fullscreen mode. Players with multiple displays can select which monitor the game uses. The available aspect ratios include 16:9, 4:3, 16:10, 21:9, and 32:9, alongside automatic and stretch settings.
Four graphics presets range from Low to Ultra. More granular options include MSAA up to 8x, SSAA up to 4x, anisotropic filtering, adjustable shadow quality and draw distance, and depth-of-field controls. The field of view can also be set anywhere from 45 to 120 degrees.
Frame rates are unlocked, while players who prefer a fixed target can choose caps of 30, 60, 90, or 120 FPS. VSync is available as another option. Together, these settings allow the game to accommodate a wider range of displays and hardware than its original Xbox 360 configuration.
Saving, maps, and controls receive quality-of-life changes
One of re:Blue’s most consequential changes affects saving. Players can save from the camp menu anywhere instead of being limited to designated save points. That adjustment reduces reliance on the original save-point structure without changing the requirement to provide the game data.
The project also adds a full area map to the world-map screen. It includes zoom controls, floor switching, and a legend. Optional markers can identify hidden items, chests, and barriers still present on a floor, with per-floor counts also carried onto the field compass.
Input support has been rebuilt for PC. re:Blue provides native keyboard-and-mouse controls, including cursor and camera-look modes operated with a mouse. Every controller button can be rebound to a keyboard key, while mouse sensitivity and cursor opacity are configurable.
An achievement list is viewable from within the game. It contains the original achievements as well as eight additional achievements created for re:Blue. Players can also select the interface and voice languages independently rather than using a single language setting for both.
Windows, Linux, SteamOS, and macOS are supported
On Windows, re:Blue can use either DirectX 12 or Vulkan. Linux support covers AMD64 and ARM64 systems, including Steam Deck and other handheld devices. The project provides an AppImage for Linux and SteamOS users. macOS builds likewise support both AMD64 and ARM64 hardware.
Custom re:Blue menus are available in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The project also includes a built-in mod manager and supports the official downloadable content.
The combination of native builds and configurable PC features makes re:Blue more than a minimal compatibility layer. Its practical impact is clearest in areas such as unrestricted saving, ultrawide display support, mouse input, and detailed area maps. Those are additions made by the open-source project, however, rather than features of a new official commercial PC edition.
Because copyrighted assets are excluded, re:Blue is not a standalone copy of Blue Dragon. Access still depends on users supplying data from their own CDs, while the project provides the software needed to run that material on its supported desktop and handheld systems.
The project source code and installation documentation are available through the official re:Blue GitHub repository, with the first stable build documented in the v1.0.0 release.
