Borderlands 2 prequel to be released later this year

by GH Staff

Borderlands 2 fans were previously disappointed to hear that Gearbox wasn’t considering a sequel for the popular game, at least not back in February. At the time, no signs of any Borderlands projects were in sight, and Gearbox declared itself unprepared to launch a new game in the series. Things have changes since however, and we now have solid indications that a prequel to Borderlands 2 is in fact under development, and will be coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 sometime towards the end of the year.

The said prequel is being developed by Gearbox, together with 2K Australia, with 2K obviously publishing. The action is said to be set in between the events of Borderlands and Borderlands 2, and players will be taking over one of the following 4 characters: Fragtrap, Nisha The Lawbringer, Athena the Gladiator or Wilhelm the Enforcer. These are Handsome Jack’s lieutenants, helping the young villain make a name for himself. The action will be taking place on Elpis and on Hyperion’s base, a base that can be seen orbiting throughout Borderlands 2. Additions to the game will include oxygen being added as a valuable resource, as well as new weapons and new means of getting around (jetpacks) due to the lack of significant gravity on Elpis.

This is certainly an interesting turn of events, considering Telltale Games is also developing an episode-based Borderlands game, similar to The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead. Overall, it certainly seems that it’s going to be a great year for Borderlands fans, with two competent studios working on two distinct games set in the same universe. More information and footage about this prequel to Borderlands 2 will most likely be revealed at E3 2014 in June.
