Sledgehammer Games’ first-person shooter title Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the biggest entertainment launch of 2014, publisher Activision has revealed.
Advanced Warfare outsold fierce competition from other video games, movies, music and books for the accolade, with Activision confirming the statistics are based off the sales on the first week following the title’s initial launch.
Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, also announced that the Call of Duty franchise has surpassed $10 billion sales worldwide since its inception in 2003, with it exceeding more revenue than box office returns for the Transformers, Hunger Games and Iron Man franchises.
“We poured our hearts into making Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare an epic ride and we are pleased with the performance,” says Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “Sales and engagement are up through the first week compared to last year. Season Pass sales are up, as well.
“The game has been very positively reviewed and the response from fans has been tremendous. We believe Advanced Warfare will be the most successful game of the year and we thank our fans for making it the biggest entertainment launch of the year.”
Based off the sales statistics, Activision is also claiming that Advanced Warfare is the most downloaded title in console history.
It was only last week that steaming service Twitch revealed that Advanced Warfare became 2014’s most streamed game during its launch week, as more than 75,000 unique users broadcasted content from the title.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the eleventh major installment in the franchise, is now available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. For more details on this year’s installment, you can check out Gamer Headlines’ review of the title.
