As popular as Activision’s Call of Duty franchise is, its latest iteration, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, has been criticized by both press and public as being a rather blatant Titanfall rip-off.
This is due in part to the game’s titular exosuit – which, at first glance, seems to be fairly derivative of the hulking, mechanical giants featured in Respawn Entertainment’s bombastic shooter, Titanfall.
The fact that both Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Titanfall began both development and public marketing within a year of each other probably didn’t help either.
Regardless, it appears that Sledgehammer Games’ co-founder, Michael Condrey, apparently designed Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s signature exosuit well before Titanfall began development – 3 year before, to be precise.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s pre-Titanfall Exosuit
Sledgehammer Games, which was founded in 2009, had reportedly been researching the real-life applications of powered suits for a considerable amount of time. It wasn’t until near the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s release in 2011 that Advanced Warfare’s exosuit design was finalized.
In an interview with Polygon for a rather large cover story, Sledgehammer Games co-founder, Michael Condrey, stated the following in regards to the design and implementation of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s exosuit”
“Coming off the tails of MW3 where we racked our brains on how to bring new experiences to the player. You talk about, ‘What else could a player do, right?’ When you talk about, ‘He already swims and he climbs and he does all these things. What’s the next set of player movements that’s really going to be exciting?'”
In related news, it appears that Advanced Warfare is having a rather difficult go of things in terms of pre-orders, with the game expecting to sell lower numbers than previous Call of Duty titles, such as Black Ops II or Ghosts.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is scheduled for release worldwide on November 4th for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
What are your thoughts on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s original exosuit design? Do you feel that the game will feel too derivative of Titanfall? Why or why not?
